    St. Martin's Church

It is a simple neoclassical building and consists of an extended west tower, a single-aisled nave with three bays, a transept of one bay and a straight closed choir with one bay. The building is constructed of brick, has round-arched windows and is covered by a slate saddle roof.
The tower has a round-arched portal in a bluestone frame with a profiled drip moulding in the west facade. This is crowned by a cross and has further continuous bluestone imposts with an oculus above it in a bluestone frame with a clock. There is a round-arched sound hole in each facade of the tower and the tower is covered by a constricted spire with slates. Next to the tower are two flanking chapels, each with an oculus in the side wall.
The choir has arched windows. The sacristy is located against the east wall of the choir and has round-arched wall openings

The current church was built in 1839 under the pastorate of M.G. Jacobs, replacing an older church. The tower was rebuilt in 1857-72 to a design by H. Jaminé (Hasselt). Restoration and enlargement by building the transept in 1925 to a design by J. Deré. The church is located in the middle of the walled cemetery.

The plan describes a single-aisled church of three bays with an extended west tower, flanked by chapels; transept of one bay and choir of one bay with flat closure; sacristy against the east facade of the choir.

Simple, neoclassical church of brick under saddle roofs (slate), provided with round-arched windows. The tower has a round-arched portal in the west facade in a hardstone frame with a profiled drip moulding, crowned with a cross; continuous, hardstone imposts; above an oculus in a hard stone frame with a clock; in each side a round arched sound hole; constricted needle spire (slate). The flanking chapels each have an oculus in the side wall. Arched windows in the choir. The sacristy has round arched wall openings.

The interior was adapted in 1970. Furniture: Statue of Saint Michael, polychromed wood (16th century); group of statues with Saint Martin and beggar, polychromed wood (17th century); statue of Saint Amandus, terracotta (18th century); statue of Saint Rosa of Lima, terracotta (18th century); processional Madonna, folk art (19th century).

Main altar, oak (first half of the 19th century) with tabernacle, oak, rococo (mid-18th century). Pulpit, oak (first half of the 19th century). Confessional, oak (first half of the 19th century). Baptismal font of hardstone, with brass lid (circa 1840). Stained glass windows (late 19th or first quarter of the 20th century).

A few 18th-century grave crosses from the cemetery are now in the Bokrijk Open Air Museum.

The Sint-Martinuskerk in Mettekoven in Heers has been given a beautiful secondary purpose. The municipality decided that in addition to the religious aspect, the church should also be given a different purpose as a community space. To achieve this, the church has undergone a transformation and has almost literally been “cut in two”. In addition to the sacred church section, there is now also a multipurpose space that can be used for meetings and small events.
