The Red Water near Olfen is one of the last real bogs in the Odenwald and is listed as a nature reserve. Red water is a rain bog or raised bog that occurs when rainwater can not seep through the ground. As a result, dead grasses, herbs, mosses and willows can not be completely decomposed, which is why they gradually form layers of peat that slowly grow above the level of the groundwater level (hence the name bog). The marshy core area of the Red Water must not be entered. However, there is a nice footpath along its edge along which you can explore the habitat Hochmoor.

Nature reserve in Olfen.
The nature reserve "Red Water" (also called "Olfener Moor") is a rare bog in the Odenwald, which is home to protected plants such as cotton grass, sundew and cranberry. It arises when low-limp water (rainwater) can not seep away. The moorland gradually bulges due to the decomposition of the peat moss.
