Halfway between the episcopal city of Constance and the Benedictine Abbey of St. Gallen, one of Bishop Salomon founded the Pelagiusstift as a spiritual center in the second half of the 10th century. This is how the town that later developed from it, Bischofszell, got its name ("the bishop's cell").
