Here he is, the "new" Vegesack boy, patiently waiting for the ships arriving in the Vegesack harbour

      September 4, 2024

The Vegesack Boy is the symbolic figure for the town of Vegesack. He represents a sailor who has no money left because he spent everything in the harbor bars of Vegesack. One explanation for the name Vegesack goes back to this fact: if you spend your money in the bars, your sack (your wallet) is swept empty: Fege-Sack.

        History

The origin is said to go back to Werner Wittgenstein, who was city director and mayor of the then independent Bremen town of Vegesack from 1915 to 1933. Wittgenstein had the idea of the Vegesack Boy as an ironic symbol for the town's name.

        Mural

At Utkiek Square near Vegesack Harbor, there is a mural of the Vegesack Boy at the inn of the same name, Zum Vegesack Jungen.

        Sculpture

For the 400th anniversary of Vegesack Harbor, the sculptor Thomas Recker created a bronze sculpture of the Vegesack Boy. This was ceremoniously unveiled in the Vegesack Harbor Forest on June 18, 2022.
