The original Romanesque church was built above the Vistula and was first mentioned in 1148. In 1191 it was made a collegiate church by Casimir II. It was destroyed by the Tatars in the 13th century and finally by the Lithuanians in 1349. In 1360, King Casimir the Great donated a new Gothic collegiate church, the choir could be older. The church was consecrated in 1382. When the Swedes retreated in 1656 under Karl X Gustav, the roof of the church caught fire. The church received a baroque façade between 1670 and 1674 and the interior was also redesigned in the baroque and rococo style during the 18th century. With the creation of the diocese of Sandomierz in 1818, it was raised to the status of a cathedral and received 1960 by Pope Paul VI. additionally awarded the title of a minor basilica (Wikipedia).
