The highest inhabited area in Europe can be found in the Georgian province of Svaneti, and in particular the village of Ushguli, which consists of four villages: Chvibiani, Murkmeli, Jibiani and Chajashi. The village is located at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level in the gorge of the Enguri. No more than 300 people live here permanently. The tower houses are the signature monuments of Ushguli. These were used as a residence and as a defense post against unwanted intruders.
