In today's ghost village of Khalde, there is only one family left who runs a guest house.In 1876 there was an armed revolt here by Georgian villagers against the Russian Empire. They were supposed to be subject to special taxes, but they didn't pay. The Russian army killed most of the residents and destroyed all houses.

Khalde is the only village in Svaneti that resisted Russian occupation in the middle of the 19th century.

Khalde consists largely of empty and dilapidated houses. One is still inhabited and that is Guesthouse Khalde.
