From orphanage to retirement home
DEnBRilIn 1688, Michel Muys, pastor in Lier, bought the building in den Bril and what we now know as 'Den Bril meeting centre'. It is being set up as an orphanage for young girls.
This new institution is called 'Mr Muys' school' or 'de Marolles'. Just like the name in Brussels, this one is also a corruption of the 'les Maricolles', the name of a newly founded monastic order. A certain Anna Putmans, a devout lady who through good works and pious devotion to the Virgin, founded this order in 1663. Maricolles in itself is also a corruption of the Latin 'Maricolea' which means 'worshipper of Mary'.

The former orphanage has been repurposed as a Lier Community Center. It is a private non-profit organization whose mission statement is to promote culture in the broadest sense of the word.

CC Den Bril features numerous meeting rooms, a fully equipped lounge with a kitchen, a multifunctional theater, and a theatre hall where films can be screened or seminars can be held.
