The Sint-Gummaruskerk, also known as the Grote Kerk, is an imposing collegiate church in the city center of Lier. From 1378, the then parish church was converted into this gem of Brabant Gothic. The construction took about 200 years and that is why you also see influences from Baroque and Rococo. Admire one of the oldest and most valuable stained glass windows from the 15th century or be amazed by the imposing silver reliquary of Saint Gummarus, the Colibrant triptych, the striking choir screen, the Lier copy of the Shroud of Turin and much more. The restoration work on the Sint-Gummaruskerk will start in the autumn of 2021 and will run in phases until 2029. The church will always remain partly open to the public. The church is dedicated to Gummarus, the patron saint of Lier. He was a knight and married to the evil Grimmara. He died on October 11, 714 in Emblem. His empty grave can be found at the current location of St. Peter's Chapel. In 754, 40 years after his death, Gummarus is canonized.

Saint Gummarus (Gommarus) of Lier (born in 664 in Emblehem, an area that includes the entire Lier territory and not only the current sub-municipality of Emblem, died ca. 714) was a knight at the court of Pepijn van Herstal and according to legend the founder of Lier. He is the patron saint of all who are struggling with a fracture. We know nothing about Gummarus with certainty. The oldest known biography probably dates from the middle of the 11th century.

The Saint Gummarus Church was built on the site of a Romanesque parish church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
The construction of the Saint Gummarus Church started in 1378 and lasted about 200 years. That is why the lower sections are purely Gothic, the middle baroque, and the tower roof rococo.
On October 20, 1496, the marriage of Philip the Fair and Joanna of Castile was solemnized here.
