Until the first half of the 19th century, ships were put over the dike at this location by means of an overtoom. In 1834 this was replaced by a wooden lock, on the same spot in the Luijendijkje. In 1905 the error house was demolished and a new stone building was built. Two years later, the wooden lock was also replaced by one made of brick. This lock is still in service.

Hiking

The Luijendijk was built in 1589 to protect the area around Het Twiske from flooding. Along Het Twiske were various whale oil and sludge bollers. The first was built in 1643, and more were later built on the west side of the river.
The ballers caused major pollution and people in nearby villages often made complaints to the Court. In 1659, Landsmeer was awarded a small compensation.
Glue was also made from the whale blubber. By 1790, all of these industries had disappeared entirely.
