Large parts of this dyke run straight through the built-up area of Amsterdam-North. Before the capital started using the north bank of the IJ for shipbuilding and industry, Nieuwendam was situated between meadows and the IJ. Life was dominated by trade, shipbuilding and the transit of dairy products from the hinterland.
