NieuwendammerdijkYears of construction of the first settlements from 1516, rebuilt after a fire around 1600 in the 17th centuryThe Nieuwendammerdijk is an original late-medieval settlement on the Waterlandse Zeedijk. Large parts of this dyke run straight through the built-up area of Amsterdam-North. Before the capital started using the north bank of the IJ for shipbuilding and industry, Nieuwendam was situated between meadows and the IJ. Life was dominated by trade, shipbuilding and the transit of dairy products from the hinterland.
