From about 1830 the systematic drainage of the Hoher Moor began, accompanied by the peasant hand engraving. Mining lasted until around the 1970s, with around two-thirds of the peat being removed. In this context, the original large moor lakes were also lost, only the Oldendorfer See and the Elmer See remained.
