The Hohe Moor was dewatered around 1830 and the peat was mined by hand. Of the original large moor lakes, only Oldendorfer See and Elmer See are preserved today. These two large water areas are supplemented by numerous small water-filled peat mines and former drainage ditches, because the water level of the high moor has been raised again since the early 1980s and especially from 2001 to 2006. The rewetting of the partially destroyed bog is to be renatured, dead spruce and birch stands are a visible sign of this wetting.
