There are 110 beds spread throughout the house, and even a single or double room costs no more than ten euros. The Hampelbaude - named after its first host, a German named Hempel or Hampel - is considered the oldest shelter in the Giant Mountains. Many illustrious guests have stayed here. Goethe is also said to have slept on hay in the Hampelbaude before climbing the Koppe accompanied by his servant at dawn on September 23, 1790 to see the sunrise.
