A real eye-catcher!👍😊‼️Unfortunately, there are still several beautiful old houses standing empty, neglected, or even abandoned to decay. Worse still: several vacant lots are reminiscent of houses that no longer exist. Vlotho's old town would be even more beautiful if as many houses as possible could be saved from decay.

On the 2.5 km long city center circular route you will pass many of these buildings and other sights of the idyllic spa town on the Weser. Vlotho Castle on the Amtshausberg is located in the middle of the most beautiful Weser landscape and is a popular tourist destination. From the castle wall of the beer garden there is a wonderful view over the Weser valley.

The hilltop castle was built around 1250 by Heinrich von Oldenburg on the Deesberg, now Amtshausberg. It served to control the Weser and the trade routes that converged in Vlotho.

Around 1567 the castle was the seat of the Drost and the district administration. After that its importance declined because the military technology changed. In 1709 the castle was approved for demolition.

The preserved foundation walls and other remains such as the dungeon or well of the once magnificent building still remind us of times gone by.
