The Wesel Heath offers everything a heathland hiker could wish for: sheepfolds, bee enclosures, and sweeping views of the landscape.

When the heather (Calluna vulgaris) blooms here in August and September, the eye is presented with a seemingly endless purple-pink splendor. The beekeepers have filled the bee enclosures with their baskets and hives, and the coveted heather honey is being collected by the busy bees. When the heath is "honeying," the air is filled with the sweet scent of the nectar.

      Lüneburg Heath
There's actually no such thing as "the" heath. While Lüneburg Heath boasts the largest contiguous heathland in Europe, it's actually more like individual, large areas spread across the entire expanse of the Lüneburg Heath. The exception is the large Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve with its vast heathland.

Due to their varying locations, sometimes on a slope, sometimes facing south, the heathlands bloom at different times, with the start of blooming almost never the same. This means you can find heather blooming as early as the end of July, and the last flowers can sometimes be seen as late as October.

The heathlands are all named, for example, Misselhorn Heath or "Wesel Heath." They are all part of the Lüneburg Heath, making orientation easier.

The heath plant that is primarily found in the Lüneburg Heath and characterizes its landscape is the common heather – "Calluna vulgaris." It is often also called heather. The bell heather (Erica tetralix) usually blooms shortly before the common heather and prefers swampy areas such as raised bogs.

Gently rolling hills on the edge of a forest, the Weseler Heide, offers many benches and wide views.

The Wesel Heath offers short trails and plenty of rest stops. This means you don't necessarily have to venture into the vast Lüneburg Heath, where you can still admire nature and the heather blooms.

The Wesel Heath (approx. 350 hectares) captivates visitors in every season with impressive views of the heathland between Wesel and Undeloh.

Highlights include the Pastorenteiche ponds, the 18th-century bakehouse known as the "Witch's House," the Heath Nature Trail, and the Heath Adventure Center.

The Heidschnuckenweg, a certified quality hiking trail with a total length of 223 km, also runs through parts of the Wesel Heath.

The 3rd stage of the Heidschnuckenweg also runs along here. All information about the Heidschnuckenweg can be found under the following link: heidschnuckenweg.de/etappen (as of July 21, 2024).
