Coevorden is the oldest city in Drenthe. In the past it was even one of the most important fortified cities in the Netherlands. The first mention of the place name comes from 1148. At that time it was called 'Koe-voorde': a place where farmers drove their cows through a ford (voorde) into the river. Works of art throughout the city tell the illustrious history of this city.

Many (historical) events take place here. The historic city walk is also worthwhile.
