Limburg is not known for its castle. Rather, it is hidden behind the cathedral and if you don't know that there is a castle, don't look for it. Nevertheless, the walls tell an interesting story.

Very nice view from the Lahn to the cathedral rock and the castle.
The Limburg Cathedral Rock was formed around 420 - 360 million years ago and consists predominantly of the minerals calcite, aragonite and dolomitic limestone. Finds on the Limburg Cathedral Rock suggest that Celts were the first permanent residents to settle on the rock. The Celts were followed by the Franconian ruling family of the Merovingians. Limburg was first mentioned in writing as “Lintpurc” in 910 AD, when the East Franconian King “Ludwig the Child” gave a farm to Count Konrad Kurzbold. He built the St. Georg Abbey on what is now the cathedral rock, around which the city of Limburg subsequently developed. The cathedral, built with Romanesque and Gothic style elements, was inaugurated in 1235 AD. Shortly before, today's castle was probably built on the cathedral rock. Both structures were built largely from limestone. The collegiate church of St. George was elevated to the status of a cathedral after the founding of the independent diocese of Limburg in 1827.
