In 1861, the old town hall (dating from 1535) was demolished and rebuilt, partially reusing salvaged building components. According to the plans, the ground floor housed a prison with four cells, as well as a fire engine and carriage house. The upper floor contained the justice of the peace, the mayor's office, the council chamber, and, to a small extent, a girls' high school. The coat of arms was not placed in its current location on the facade until 1879.
