The church was built by Giuseppe Zimbalo and recalls another building by the Lecce Master, the Church of the Annunziata di Galugnano. It stands on the site of two ancient chapels dedicated to San Nicola and Santa Venera. It was completed in 1630.
After the abolition of the order in 1807, the monastery became the seat of the Carabinieri barracks (1831) and later a school. The church was instead converted into a tobacco depot. In 1831 the Archconfraternity of the SS. Crucifix and the Gonfalone who restored it.
