Assens was already a trading town in the Middle Ages, and the port has always been an important transhipment point. Market rights can be traced back to 1524. The mighty Frauenkirche testifies to the prosperity of the city. Trade grew steadily during industrialization, also thanks to the financially strong merchant courts. The old town center with its courtyards is well preserved, there is much to discover.
