The cellar dates from the founding of the city of Freiburg and can be viewed for the price of a friendly smile. Display boards and exhibits, together with a view of the basement, offer a "journey" to the time around Anno Domini 1000 and the following centuries, in a total of 6 construction stages.

Our “Bären” is not only the oldest inn in Germany, it is also one of the oldest buildings from the time Freiburg was founded. The long line of over 50 Bärenwirte goes back to the “Bienger” family in 1311. Today’s Bärenwirte still perform exactly the same tasks as Hanmann Bienger, then “Würt zem roten Bern”, did a few hundred years ago.
