Its existence dates back to at least 1696, when the university building was built on the west side after the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1693. The palace was built according to the designs of several architects, including Francesco and Antonino Battaglia and Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. On the east side, opposite the university, is the Palazzo San Giuliano, which was built in 1738 according to plans by the architect Giovan Battista Vaccarin for the margraves of the Paternò Castello of San Giuliano.
