The water mill "Untermühle" in Freienorla was mentioned as early as 1176, from 1457 it was run as a lower mill with a tavern, and after being rebuilt in 1896 it worked as a trading mill between Jena and Pößneck and is the last of the numerous grinding, impact, oil and cutting mills operated by the Orla. The drive wheel is over 5 meters high and 2 meters wide, making it one of the largest surviving of its kind in Thuringia. The Untermühle Freienorla with its original and functional mill equipment has been technically improved and renovated time and again and is now a technical museum.
