Despite its diminutive proportions, this Museum is located on Argyrokastrou square, in the Medieval City of Rhodes, in a building known to have once functioned as a weaponry repository for the Knights of the Order of St. John. Inaugurated in 1966, this Museum hosts exhibits originating from various areas of Rhodes as well as from such other islands of the Dodecanese complex as Astypalaia, Symi, Halki, Karpathos and Nisyros. As in the case of the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, the establishment of the Folk Decorative Arts collection started sometime during the Italian rule. More specifically, a first initiative for the launching of this venture has been attributed to Mrs. Marica Montessanto. Amongst the artefacts forming part of the collection there are embroideries, carpets, tools, pottery and a wide variety of metal objects which, combined to the overall arrangement of the premises do reproduce, albeit approximately, the image and ambience of a typical Dodecanesian home at the time of the Ottoman rule.
