With the relocation of the Residenz from Ludwigslust to Schwerin in 1837, the need arose for representative and functionally located barracks and storage facilities for military technology and equipment.

Georg Adolph Demmler oversaw the construction of the Arsenal and created a building in the style of Florentine palace architecture. It comprises two courtyards visually connected by a central projection with a tower and incorporates the military hospital built in 1828 on Wismarschen Straße.

Over time, the building took on various functions. Until 1865, parts of the Grenadier Battalion were housed there; after the Second World War, it served as a refugee shelter and subsequently as a home for various police institutions.

Since October 1990, the Arsenal has housed the Ministry of the Interior. During renovation and reconstruction work between 1991 and 2005, the building was given a reddish coat of paint after restoration work.

The Arsenal was built in 1840 and was used to house military equipment. Since 1990, the Arsenal has been home to the Ministry of the Interior in Schwerin.
