The Old Cemetery is almost in the middle of the city and is not too big. An enlargement was not possible, so the forest cemetery on the Diezenhalde was opened in 1969.

The cemetery was established there in 1835 and the first burial took place the following year. However, at the beginning of the 20th century the cemetery on Herdweg also reached its capacity limits and was therefore to be expanded by another eastern section, the "New Cemetery".
