Rhine facilities between "old Krahnen" and the bulwark: The 16th century crane at the foot of the Kranenberg named after it is one of the city's most famous sights and a Renaissance industrial monument. The stone building stands at today's end of the town towards Bonn, directly on the fortified bank of the Rhine. As a special feature, Old Krahnen built a basalt icebreaker up the Rhine, which saved the crane house from certain destruction in 1784 and later.
The bulwark, on the other hand, at the other end of the Rhine system, has protected the entire city of Andernach in the northeast of the city wall with an acute-angled redoubt to the Rhine since 1661. This also worked as an icebreaker. The city lies in a bend in the Rhine and was in earlier times at great risk of drifting ice. This bulwark was once a defensive bastion near the river bank, but today it is a war memorial.
