The Church of St. Nikolai is one of the beautiful old North German brick churches. Originally it was a Romanesque basilica. It was built over in the Gothic style around 1300 and further extensions were added at the beginning of the 16th century.
On March 15, 1945, the Nikolaikirche was badly damaged in a bomb attack. Some rescued pieces were brought to the Marienkirche, e.g. the altar and the baptismal font.
The church has long since been deconsecrated. In recent years, the Gardelegen and Surroundings Association for the Preservation of Culture and Monuments has developed it into a sought-after venue for both open-air and indoor events.
