The Holzmaar is located in the Vulkaneifel in Rhineland-Palatinate almost halfway between Gillenfeld (2.5 km to the southwest) and Eckfeld. The maar has a size of approx. 6.8 ha with a diameter of 325 m and a depth of 21 m; it is located in a nature reserve and is almost completely surrounded by forest.

It is fed by a spring stream from the Sammetbach, which crosses the maar. The Dürre Maar is also in the immediate vicinity.

On the south or southwest bank, the maar is silted up with sediments, the drill cores of which provide extensive information about the climate up to the last ice age. The Holzmaar sediments date back to 23,220 calendar years BP
