      Klaus Kütemeier: Sitting couple
(1968-1970, black granite, installed there in 2014)
Am Ehrenhain / Schmalfelder Straße, 24568 Kaltenkirchen

Two human figures sit side by side at the entrance to the Ehrenhain in Kaltenkirchen. Sculptor Klaus Kütemeier created two individual sculptures from black granite, which are each placed on a pedestal side by side. These are the figures of a young man and a young woman, both of whom are undressed and upright. Their postures are very similar to one another, both look forward and have their hands resting loosely on their thighs.

The figures are reduced to the essentials: without activity and without enveloping clothing, with their smoothed and idealized bodies, they represent more the “idea” of a person than that they were actually designed according to living models. The two people sit next to each other, but do not directly relate to each other. You could almost say: They are the covers of people, but they lack humanity. And that is exactly what stimulates the question of what makes humans human at all. What shows our strength, our individuality and vitality? With what content do we fill in the forms?

The sculpture had stood in front of the clinical center in Kaltenkirchen since 1974 and became homeless after the hospital was closed. The search for a new location by the city administration was difficult because there was no interest in the work of art in various places. In a public survey, 40 years after the first installation, the new location in a small green area was finally chosen.
