In addition to the Alster, the Pinnau has its source in the area of the municipality Henstedt-Ulzburg.

The Pinnau, a small tranquil river, rises near Henstedt - Ulzburg initially flows south towards Pinneberg and from there westwards and then flows into the Elbe after a good 41 km.

The water level of the Pinnau is partly dependent on the tide, since the funnel mouth of the Elbe, which is also influenced by the tidal range, presses the water into the estuaries. A barrier at the mouth of the pin has protected the river area from floods since 1969.

The oldest functioning swing bridge in Germany also runs over the Pinnau, the swing bridge Klevendeich, which was built in 1887 in the Moorreger district of Klevendeich and is a listed building as a cultural monument.

Until the beginning of 1960 the river was one of the most polluted rivers in Germany, but the water quality has improved significantly in the meantime.
The Pinnau is from Pinneberg Bundeswasserstraße and is still used today for commercial shipping from Uetersen.
