Hiking

Due to industrialization in the 19th century, the number of Protestant Christians in Ettlingen and the surrounding area increased rapidly. Initially, Protestant services were held in the former castle chapel, then in the assembly hall of a neighboring school building. The Protestant congregation's desire for their own—larger—church grew year by year. With the groundbreaking ceremony on September 24, 1878, construction finally began on the long-awaited new church. The architect was church building advisor Ludwig Diemer. On June 29, 1880, the church (still unnamed) was consecrated with a grand procession and a celebratory service.

The Johanneskirche is the oldest Protestant church in Ettlingen. Over the decades, the church has undergone many redesigns - some "scars" are still visible on the outer walls today, for example under the middle church windows on the south side of the masonry: this is where the main entrance was originally. This was bricked up in 1962 as part of renovations.
