The construction of the bridge began in 1990 and the inauguration took place on October 3, 1992, the day of German unity, to which the bridge owes its name. This makes it the youngest Main Bridge in Würzburg. In the run-up to construction, there had been numerous public discussions about the impact the finished bridge would have on the cityscape; the first draft had envisaged a significantly higher pylon, which, however, was eventually shortened to the limit of what was technically feasible as a compromise.
