The Neutor is one of the outer fortifications of the Marienberg Fortress.
The gate passage of the new gate is slightly curved in order to avoid a direct shooting through. The loopholes are laid out in such a way that there would have been no cover for advancing enemies anywhere. The gate guards of the New Gate were probably often bored and for this reason left scribbled letters on the gate walls. Deep grooves made by the guards can also be seen on the innermost loopholes: This is where they put the finishing touches to their halberds (spear, thrust weapon).
The openings in the roof vault were used for ventilation and ensured that the powder vapor could quickly escape.

      Wikipedia (Marienberg Fortress, 2023-02-16):
      de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festung_Marienberg
“… The new gate was completed by Johann Philipp Preuß in 1652/1653 as a “new” entrance to the prince-bishop’s palace. The rich ornamental and figurative decoration of the sandstone fronts probably comes from Zacharias Juncker the Elder. J., but was largely renewed in the 20th century. The Neutor shows motifs relating to the sovereign's government, such as allusions to the Peace of Westphalia that took place a few years earlier with the participation of Johann Philipp von Schönborn. ...”
