The Leie valley has been a source of inspiration for numerous artists for almost two hundred years. The slow-flowing meandering golden river was the center of the flax industry for centuries, but it disappeared since the 1970s. Between 1950 and 1970, the Leie bends were straightened, flood areas were raised and banks were reinforced. The once idyllic landscape of the Leie was seriously damaged. Several enthusiasts of the region have fought tooth and nail against the so-called improvement works. This prevented the most beautiful Leie meanders between Zulte and Deinze from being filled in. The unique old Leie meanders are best explored via one of the marked walking routes. The wide towpath along the Leie is a classic for cyclists and cycling tourists.
