Ernst-Abbe-Platz in Jena was built on the site of the former Carl Zeiss factory and symbolizes the urban transformation after reunification. Today, it is a central, traffic-calmed university campus with listed buildings, business offices, a cafeteria, an auditorium, and art installations by Frank Stella.

It is soon to be redesigned to be climate-friendly. The corresponding funding notification from the federal government was received in Jena in March 2024.

Ernst Abbe was a physicist, inventor, entrepreneur and social reformer. He achieved outstanding results in all areas of his work and thus made a decisive contribution to the technical advance, business success and continued existence of the Carl Zeiss and SCHOTT companies.

Abbe was born on January 23, 1840 in Eisenach and grew up in humble circumstances. With the help of a scholarship, he was able to begin his training as a mathematician and physicist. He studied in Jena and Göttingen from 1857 to 1861. In 1863, Abbe qualified as a professor in Jena, where he then worked as a private lecturer.
The square is named after Ernst Abbe.
