In the Middle Ages, the entire district between the Old and New Market Streets was called “The New Market”. It is assumed that the enlargement of the city - the creation of the new town - compared to the original monastery settlement is the reason for the name.
In an old city map from 1761, today's Alte Marktstrasse is still called "The New Old Market". This is probably intended to express the older age of this part of the New Market.
