The old city fortifications in Kulmbach are best preserved at the Schießgraben. Not only is the wall almost complete there, and in some parts it is still at its original height, but various wall towers can also still be seen.
The most extensive tower is the "Heilingschwertturm" (an old shell tower of the city fortifications from the 14th century) below the Catholic parish church. It differs from the other wall towers in that it is round and protrudes far into the moat.
