The Schaalsee is up to 80 meters deep in places and is the result of glacial glaciers and meltwater rivers. The northeastern part of the lake is known as the Bernstorfer Binnensee and the Niendorfer Binnensee.

The lake contains several islands, some of them large.

Kampenwerder Island is a good 3 kilometers long and up to 1.6 kilometers wide, and covers a good 2.5 km². The island is connected to the neighboring island of Stintenburg Island by an artificial dam. The road crossing this dam continues to Lassahn, to whose district the island also belongs. During the GDR era, Kampenwerder Island was a strictly restricted area.

Today, approximately 30 people live on the island, and part of it is used for agriculture. In addition to Kampenwerder Island and Stintenburg Island, there are several other uninhabited islands in the lake.

The largest island in the Schaalsee is Kampenwerder, a popular destination. Only a few people live there between fields and a wooded strip of shore. Visitors reach the island via a narrow causeway from the municipality of Lassahn on the eastern shore of the lake. The path leads across the neighboring Stintenburg island with the historic bridge house, where border guards were stationed in GDR times. Today, the renovated half-timbered house houses a restaurant. Both islands belong to the estates of the family of Bernstorff, who also lives in the mansion on Stintenburg Island.

Via the Klopstockweg you reach the largest island in the Schaalsee via Stintenburginsel. It is a charming natural place.
