The Schaalsee is up to 80 meters deep in places and is the result of glacial glaciers and meltwater rivers. The northeastern part of the lake is known as the Bernstorfer Binnensee and the Niendorfer Binnensee.

The lake contains several islands, some of them large.

The Kampenwerder Island is a good 3 kilometers long and up to 1.6 kilometers wide, covering a good 2.5 km². The island is connected to the neighboring island of Stintenburginsel by an artificial dam. The road connection over this dam continues to Lassahn, to whose municipal area the island also belongs.

During the GDR era, the Kampenwerder Island was a strictly restricted area.

Today, approximately 30 people live on the island, and part of it is used for agriculture.

In addition to the Kampenwerder and Stintenburginsel, there are several other uninhabited islands in the lake.

The island is beautiful! Both islands can be visited on foot. At a certain point you can't go further with the bike.

The beautifully designed courtyards are really worth a trip!
