A particularly beautiful natural monument is the tufa slope in Lingenau. It is one of the most magnificent calcareous sinter formations in Europe north of the Alps and thus one of the most outstanding geological features in Vorarlberg.

Here, spring water cascades over a 40-meter-high ridge, approximately 30 meters wide, into the Subersach Gorge. The Nagelfluh dump, visible in some places, is partially covered by several meters of calcareous sinter and tufa. On the overhangs, mushroom-shaped overflow layers have developed into stalactite-like canopies. At the base of the rock face, the water collects in several tufa basins. Below the waterfall, the lime-depositing water sinters the slope down to the Subersach. Plant and animal remains are covered and encrusted with lime. After the organic matter dissolves, an exact imprint (fossils) remains. The resulting porous, sponge-like rock is called tufa, and the denser rock is called travertine.

The water from the spring tuff flows into the ravine of the raging stream.

The tufa in Lingenau is one of the most impressive natural phenomena in Vorarlberg. This short hike lets you see rocks being formed in near real time.
But what is this spring tuff anyway? The term tuff is actually wrong from a geological point of view. Tuff is rock formed from solidified volcanic ash. When the Romans around 15 B.C. conquered Vorarlberg, they also came to the Bregenzerwald. The strange rock they found here reminded them of the rocks in their homeland in southern Italy and they named it after this tuff rock. But how does this source tuff really come about? Nothing going on without moss
In order for swelling tuff rock to form, a few ingredients are needed. And they are optimally available in Lingenau. The majority of the municipal area lies on a glacial moraine or gravel areas formed after the Ice Age. These areas are very permeable to water, the rock is mostly calcareous. When the calcareous water comes to the surface and flows over moss carpets, algae carpets or colonies of cyanobacteria, a larger amount of lime is deposited because these organisms remove carbon dioxide from the water for photosynthesis and the lime precipitates as a result. The lime settles around branches, stones, small trees, etc. and upward-growing structures or steps in stream terraces are formed. In good conditions, lime sediments can grow by up to 20 mm per year. Within a few centuries, meter-high structures are created.
The swelling tuff was also used as a building material for a long time. It was light, strong, well insulating and fire resistant. An example can still be found today on the foundation walls of the chapel in Lingenau.
