The Mauzenstein is an impressive red sandstone rock northwest of Bad Herrenalb on the ridge between the Alb and Murg valleys.
witness to early settlement

The boulder is designated as a natural monument and geotope. Adaptations made by humans are particularly striking. The information sign put up reads: "It is assumed that the stone served the astral cult (worship of the stars) in the early days of settlement".

"The Mauzenstein is a red sandstone rock, designated as a natural monument, on the border between the Baden-Württemberg towns of Gaggenau (Rastatt district) and Bad Herrenalb (Calw district) in the northern Black Forest. It is not far from the Bernstein, at 704.8 m above sea level on the Mauzenberg south of the saddle to the northern Tannschachberg.[1] Stratigraphically it belongs to the upper scree horizon (smc 2) of the Middle Buntsandstein. The layered structure of the sedimentary rock can be seen on the sides."
