The royal symbol of power was built in the 1360's on Mont Andaon, which overlooks Villeneuve. The impressive fortress housed permanent barracks, a court of law and a prison, where you can still see the 18th and 19th century doodles of the prisoners. The soldiers occupied the site until 1792. The fort can be visited today, there is a very nice view of Avignon and a breathtaking panoramic view of Mont Ventoux, the Alpilles and the Luberon.

Spectacular view over the Rhone past the much sung about bridge to the fort.
