The impressive city walls of Avignon are among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Europe. With a length of around 4.3 kilometers, they enclose the historic old town with its numerous gates and almost 40 towers.
A walk along the walls is particularly worthwhile in the early morning or at sunset. The light is especially beautiful then, and the mighty stone walls appear particularly impressive. From various sections, there are great photo opportunities of the old town, the Rhône river, and the famous Pont Saint-Bénézet bridge.
