The history of the ferry between Krimpen aan de Lek and Kinderdijk dates back to around 1300, and perhaps even earlier. At that time, it was possible to cross the river at low tide, but staying dry was also impossible. Those who didn't like this had to use some kind of vessel. The first official document mentioning the ferry dates from 1358. Over the centuries, the ferry hasn't always operated from the same location; the first ferry causeways used to be east of its current route. For various reasons, in 1779 it was decided to move the ferry to its current location, where it has been operating since 1797.Source: veerdienstkinderdijk.nl/nl/geschiedenis
