"The city hall Herne is since 1912 seat of advice and administration of the city.
On May 13, 1911, the laying of the foundation stone took place and on November 4, 1911, the topping-out ceremony took place. Since 1 October 1912, the first offices moved to the new city hall to inaugurate it on December 6, 1912 festive. On this occasion, the first mayor Karl Büren was awarded the title of Lord Mayor.
State-of-the-art construction materials were used: The roofs and roof truss foundations were made in iron truss construction, the roof truss of the central structure in reinforced concrete. The exterior of the solid red brick and tuff building is representative. The market square is dominated by the high central building with an open portico and a front terrace, which is delimited by three staircases with corner columns. Decorative, coat-carrying lion figures stand on the show side. The upper part of the central building, which behind its slender windows includes the council hall and the magistrate meeting rooms, is designed as a portico with gable-crowning. By contrast, the side wings are kept simple. A dome-like roof, similar to the roofs of a Corps de Logis of the 18th century, highlights the central building opposite the lateral roofing. The height of the structure measures 42 meters from the base to the top of the tower.
According to the exterior, the middle section was created in a representative but restrained manner. The entrance stairs and the main staircase were made in concrete, which was partially left visible. Some meeting rooms, the Trausaal (bog oak) and the Lord Mayor's office were decorated with wood paneling or wall coverings. The council chamber is a prestigious highlight: 6.5-meter-high cedar wood paneling, floor-to-ceiling windows, oak armchairs and desks give the room its effect.
The total cost finally amounted to 950,000 marks. Further planned additions were not carried out.
Today, the town hall is the seat of the mayor of the city of Herne, seat of the administration, meeting room of the city council and the district representation Herne center; since 1985 it is under monument protection. On the occasion of the centenary on December 6, 2012, a comprehensive exhibition on the history of the Town Hall was compiled and exhibited until February 9, 2013 in the offices of the Town Hall. Upon completion, selected panels on the history of the house will continue to be on display.
