The cycle path along the Rhine-Herne Canal is part of the "Route of Industrial Heritage". This section is the "Emscher Park Cycle Path", which is part of a 230-kilometer circuit, the "main cultural channel". So you can stay awhile on these trails and see a lot around the canal. Of course the ships. But also the industry around it or the interesting lock systems, which you cross over again and again with the wheel.

The paths here are easy to drive, but mostly unpaved. Nevertheless, even with the road bike feasible (although the 7 kg racing file with 23er tires is probably not the optimal vehicle). Of course, this route is quite popular. If you like having free travel, it is advisable to start early.

Very nice to drive, even in summer because trees provide a lot of shade.
Sometimes you have to leave the path to change the side of the canal, but these are usually only short distances across the bridges. In most cases, obstacles such as port or power plant sites have to be avoided.

Driving along the canal is always interesting. Unfortunately the path is not in the best condition everywhere, there is still room for improvement. Be careful with the underpasses, as it is usually quite narrow and without insight.
