Towards the end of the 19th century, strong population growth and several unusually dry years in Rheinhessen led to a great water shortage; after almost all wells in Saulheim dried up around 1900, the civil engineer Bruno von Böhmer developed a new supply system in which groundwater from the Rhine valley was distributed via elevated tanks – an important part of this is the water house built in the Art Nouveau style in 1905 on the Haubenberg, from which the water flowed by natural gravity to Ober-Saulheim.
