The old town of Wernigerode offers a multifaceted picture with many restored half-timbered houses.

Artfully painted windows and doors, colorful partitions and imposing beam constructions conjure up a colorful atmosphere.

That is why the heath poet Hermann Löns also called Wernigerode the colorful town in the Harz Mountains.

Wernigerode was first mentioned in 1121.

As early as 1279 people spoke of the so-called "nova civitas", the new town.

Today everything looks historical to the viewer and is therefore part of the old town. Most of the houses from the original development are no longer standing, as several town fires have occurred over time.

The mighty castle towers over the old town as the successor to the castle that was already there when the city was founded.

The Counts of Wernigerode converted the building into a baroque palace and finally into a representative palace designed in the historical style.

Today there is a museum in the walls.
